Day 92 Where Are You?

Do you have a memory of a better place or time? Do you really think there was a better time than this time or a better place than this place?

No time is better than now. No place is better than here. You can dream of times and places from long ago and imagine that they're better. They're only better in your imagination. You forget what you want to forget and remember what you want to remember. It was never that good. It was never that bad. It was like now, good and bad, depending on how you want to imagine it.

This time and place has infinite depth, because your imagination has infinite depth. What exists is like raw material for your imagination. You fill in the blanks. You paint the picture of your experience whatever colors you like. You choose good or bad according to your needs. Sometimes you need a bad experience to make you feel good. Sometimes you need emptiness to have something to fill. You may need dreams to entertain yourself. You may need pathos to liberate your dreams.

What does it matter in a dream? Good or bad, the dream ends. When the dream ends you are liberated from it. The good or bad judgments end. Nothing will come from it. Nothing will remain. It disappears forever because it never existed. It leaves no reverberations.

Morning comes and a new day begins, again and again. You'll wake up when you want to wake up. You'll never fall asleep again, if that's what you want. You're free to awaken or sleep as you like.

When you dream, you're still real. You continue. Life continues. God continues. The world turns, regardless of your attention. The collective dream continues. You can join it or leave it, as you like.

It takes courage to wake up while others sleep. To be the only one awake can feel like a terrible responsibility. It's not. The dreamer is cared for, always. You don't have to do anything. Everyone is safe.

You don't need to tiptoe through the dreams of others. They'll fit you into their dream stories as they like. You're not responsible for their choices. You can be a hero and a villain at the same time. You can be a star, or you can slip by unnoticed.

You're not alone. You're surrounded by dreams and dreamers. The dreams interweave. The dreamers dance. The dream will end when it ends. Then you'll see it for what it is, nothing at all.

Day 81 My 55th Year Practicing Traditional Shamanism

In the day to day existence we struggle through, sometimes it feels as if we get no where. We try so hard just to stay afloat in this sea of hunger, panic, need and competition. It is an amazingly hard thing to keep one’s sanity and some sense of calm and peace when we are swirling around in other people’s demands and expectations.
As I celebrate my 55th year as a Traditional Shaman, I have surely seen much and experienced for myself this sense of trying to have a life that seemed to never be allowed in peace. I have worked with all kinds of people and have brought what help I could to each and every person who asked for healing. I have taught people the ways of healing in many forms, the way each person could most resonate to their own gifts for healing others. But I tell you, I have the feeling that I am trying to do heart surgery on a kitchen table.
Sometimes we throw our hands up and say, “I just can’t do it anymore!”, but no one hears us, the wind does not die down, we continue being buffeted, pushed this way and that. No matter how we try, how we manipulate, direct, avoid, manhandle, negotiate, cry, scream, or medicate, it does not stop. Is this all that life is?
Now is the time to step right into the middle of this hurricane. Get out of the howling wind and walk into the eye. Stop trying to do surgery on the kitchen table. Stop struggling to do the impossible. Walk into the most fearsome place of the hurricane, right into the eye and stand still there for a minute. The wind has stopped. There is no noise, no person, no conflict, no positive, no negative, no goals, no rewards, no expectations. Stand there for a minute. This place is even more scary than your overwhelming life. You can feel the fear in your chest here, you can feel it in your head and spine, you can feel fear physically here and can hardly bear to be here for one second. The quiet is deafening. The lack of movement is unbearable. But stay here as long as you can. Stay here for a few more moments. Listen.
Try to hear the ocean waves as they reach the shore. Are they crashing in or gently lapping the beach? Can you hear seagulls calling from the sky? Is it day or night? Become aware of what is here in this quiet place. You have come full circle back to nature. Nature who bore you in the beginning, who carries you through life although you are barely aware of her and nature who takes you back when your overwhelming life is through. Is it any wonder that all the mystical, magical practices of healers and Shamans throughout history are connected to nature. Be with the seashore and seagulls for a moment. They demand nothing of you. They are you.
Who are you here? Do you feel little and insignificant?  You cannot do heart surgery with a butter knife. You feel you cannot do anything. You are so helpless really. And all that you do is just a terrible effort with so little benefit. You are tired. You want to let go. And in this place, the center of the eye of your life, right here, right now, in this most scary place, let go. Just be here. Watch the winds howling around you. Flying people and chairs and buildings and expectations and responsibilities can be seen whirling around you. But you stand in the eye where the wind is still and you are untouched by those things for just a moment.  Let the fear subside. You are still.This is the place where healing begins. This is the place I teach about. It is different for each one of us but we all have this place. As we get over being scared of it, of being in the eye of the storm we can find our true self here. But most people are too scared to stand here for any length of time at all.  For most, it is easier to be swallowed up in the storm than it is to step out of the storm and see your own smallness, your own insignificance. But in this very place, this insignificance, lies your peace and your ability to heal.
Some people call this place, this eye of the storm where you are small and little, God, Allah, Spirit, At-One-Ment. And because they believe it is the place of God they find the courage to stand here and not be too, too scared. And if we stand here long enough to get comfortable with this trueness of ourselves we can find the peace and love that is here, has always been here waiting to love us and heal us and give us peace. In fact, if we can spend more of each minute in this place, more of each hour, more of each day, we find that we too can find a way to heal ourselves and to heal others. We find the power of the Spirit is here, in this hurricane’s eye and this power has always been here with us; the power to heal, to love, to be happy, to be at peace. It is not of this earthly world. It is inside the center of each of us.
This is what I teach. Each of us is unique and each person that I teach to heal learns in a unique way. But I am here to help you draw back the curtain and expose the truth about your own self. You are powerful. You are the most powerful person on earth. You have the power to be happy, to let go, to be at peace right now within you. And you have the power to heal.
Fifty five years of my life have been dedicated to Traditional Shamanism and teaching healing. I have studied all over the world with teachers and healers from so many walks of life. And every one of those wise masters will tell you about the place in the center of the storm we must learn to find and stand in to realize those most precious gifts we are all given.  It is from this place that much more than heart surgery can be done on much less than a kitchen table. If you are ready to find your gifts and share with them with those you love, those you care about, those who need you, I am honored to show you how.
For 55 years of service to you my brothers and sisters I am truly grateful! I honor you for showing me the way.

Day 80 Chakras

Hiroshi Motoyama gave us the first scientific evidence of chakras when he placed an electromyograph on the body's chakra locations and detected regular high frequency signals coming from the chakra points. He then created a device to measure photon emission and again measured the chakras to find that chakras emit photons and the more "awakened" a chakra is, the more photons it emits. Motoyama also found that by concentrating the mind on a certain chakra one can dramatically increase the  level of photons being emitted. Chakras are transducers of higher dimensional energies and can be measured in a physical way.
According to William Collinge, chakras spin in 2 ways simultaneously, both clockwise and counterclockwise. It is hard for us to see two whirlpools of water spinning in opposite directions in the same place at the same time but that is how William sees it.
According to Hector Ramos there should be a balance between these two spinning actions. The clockwise direction is the chakra receiving energy and the counter clockwise is the chakra emitting energy. Various factors set our charkas off balance, either giving out too much energy or recewiving too much energy, physical, mental, emotional and spiritual factors.
There are also some who call this imbalance an opening or closing  of the chakra such as open minded, close minded, open hearted, closed hearted, so if a chakra is imbalanced, some call that chakra closed. I don't like the term closed or open because they don't really close or open but rather spin off kilter.
Some schools teach that you open a chakra when you use it to give and you close it when you are done giving, but I do not resonate with this teaching. To each his own. Since it is believed that a chakra is an oscillator with its own frequency , a sound frequency can be used to balance each chakra using the scientific concept of sympathetic vibration which means that if you listen to or intone the the note or vibration a chakra would emit when in balance you can raise your own chakra to vibrate at the frequency. Ohm is considered the the original sound of the unfolding universe. If you spend just a few minutes intoning the word ohm or aum in any note on the scale you will feel your chakras lining up with that chant to some degree. The Schuman Response is a vibration of frequency found to promote balance and healing in everyone. You might want to do a study in this.
The study of chakras is a long one and not necessarily considered important in many Shamanic communities only because they had no conception of internal electromagnetic energy systems. Science has taken North America a long way in the study of the body's energy. Yet Shamans all over the world did recognize the necessity of balance in the 7 body system. They all teach that balance is imperative for you to live a life without being a weeble that constantly wobbles.

Day 79 The Whale Story

Day 79 The Whale Story
Imagine that you are a whale. Feel your whale body, your huge size, your rows or straining teeth that gather food as you move through the ocean. Feel your fins and your great tail that directs your path. Now feel the ocean around you; its coolness, your home, your means of finding food and sustaining yourself. Is the ocean moving around you or is it just still? Your food is found in the currents. As you travel the currents you find schools of little fish to eat. You must get into the current to sustain yourself. Now call on Madame Pele to show you the current. Call out to her with your whale song in the night. Listen for your brothers and sisters to call back to you for they have found the current and will show you the way. Go to the current, to your brothers and sisters and swim with them in the current.

Now feel the current increasing around you as you get closer to it. It gets stronger and stronger and starts to carry you along effortlessly. See your brothers and sisters there with you in this current. Schools of fish come streaming by numbered in the thousands. Open your mouth and use your teeth like a sieve to filter in the good food and keep the non edible things away. Fill your belly with the gifts of Madame Pele. You are a hungry whale, a skinny whale as you have been away from the current for the long time. Feed long and heartily and sing your song to your brothers and sisters thanking them for showing you the way. You have found the current where your food your sustenance is located. Feed heartily. Nourish yourself and thrive in this current. Your ride has just begun.

Day 78 The Meaning of Aloha

A = AO
L = LOKAHI
O = OIAIO
H = HA'A HA'A
A = ALOHA

 As a way of living in harmony with yourself and the whole world. Grab your surfboard and take a ride now.
A = AO Light - i, the light of the sun shining down on the islands and on you. In ancient terms the A in Aloha are about awareness: awareness of our place in nature, our loving relationships with our fellow brothers and sisters, our interconnectedness in this web of life. When you have the spirit of Aloha you are like a child in the playgound of love, fully in the moment, fully present to all the goodness and blessings, beauty and joy around you. Paddle out in the beautiful sunlight and get ready for a great wave to come up behind you. Be watching for it as you get a tan with your fellow surfers. You have to be aware!

L = LOKAHI  Oneness. Being in the wave, riding it along with everything else in the wave. The unity of everything and your part in this unity. You can feel this unity on the islands so very strongly. It requires and openess and honesty that children are so famous for. Speaking your truth and respecting the truth of all brings this unity to the forefront. You are moving in this wave and letting it propel you towards the shore lined with palm trees. You can ride freely when you are one with this wave.
O = OIAIO I'O = Truth. Feeling the energy of the wave as strong and true. Recognizing this energy of nature's truth we can learn from it and how to use it in our own lives. There is an honesty that pervades the islands. You can't live there long without facing your own deceptions and dealing with them. This is the spirit of aloha, being truthful with yourself. Do you think you have no power? Do you believe that you can't change your life for the better? Come into this wave of nature, into the territory of Madame Pele and feel truth all around you. It is bound to show you what you can really do if you choose. You ride in your truth and you are better at it than you thought!
H = HA'A HA'A = Humility. And as we ride this great Hawaiian wave of power how can we not feel humble in the immense force pushing our sufrboards towards the shore! We are just little things in this incredible wave of life, love and abundance!

A = ALOHA Absolute, true love. That beautiful touch of Divine essence permanently installed in each one us.

Day 77 Is There Evil in The World?

If you decide something is negative, then it is. If you decide something is positive, then it is. If you want to believe in good versus bad, then you decide you will, and it exists. But when you get beyond negative and positive, now you are deciding to have neither good nor bad and now you are getting to a real place! The Hawaiian Huna teachings say that you are responsible for everything that happens to you. And that is what I am saying, too. You create your own reality. It will be as good or as bad as you choose. So if you can get beyond good and bad you can reach God, At-One-ment, Enlightenment.

Day 67 The River Of Life

Catching Up with Your Life
by Shaman Elder Maggie Wahls
(Email: shaman@shamanelder.com)

Welcome to the river of life! You have an inner tube to float along in. It is yours and will never be taken away from you. Float with me down this river of life. We can't see where the river is going, we can't see around the next bend, but look there over you head, grab that fruit off the overhanging branch and taste the gifts of the river. There are many more branches with all kinds of delicacies here in the river.
Look at all those who float along with us! Honest people, healers, good people who want to float here and experience life and live their lives to the fullest.
Here comes a boulder in the water. You will just float around it, don't worry about the obstacles, they come and they go but you are in your inner tube and always safe.
The river is quickening now. People are saying there are rapids up ahead. Some people are trying to climb out of the river. Look at them holding on to the boulders, clinging to them, fighting against the water. Some are scrambling up the river banks standing still watching the river of life go by them. They look sad don't they, and scared to ride this river.
But we are not scared! We go through the rapids like a great Disneyland adventure! We come out the other side just fine even if we got a little wet and we see more gifts hanging on branches over the water we can easily reach. The people on the river banks can't reach these gifts from there. They must get back into the river if they want these gifts. Let’s holler to them! "Come on! The water is fine! You are safe here! You belong here! We will be with you! Come on in!" Maybe one will come out of his or her rut, back to living life and we will be happy about that.
I hear the rushing of a water fall, do you? Oh boy, hang on! This will be a big adventure! Swoosh! Over we go tumbling around and bobbing back up, laughing and quite wet indeed! What an adventure that was! We are safe throughout this ride and we know it, no matter what happens.
We know there are more bends in the river but we don't know what they will bring. We know there are more boulders in the river but we know not to cling to them. We don't need to. We know other people are standing on the river banks too scared to travel this river of life freely the way we do. We feel sad that they can't do it. It is their choice.
We know that will be other branches along the river offering us precious gifts and we need to stay in the river to reach them.
Where does this river go? Eventually when our time has passed, it takes us to a golden sea where all the other souls can be found in peace and joy and harmony. I can't wait to get there myself! But we have to ride the river until we get there. So in the meantime I am loving this inner tube, this river, this ride and experiencing it for all I am worth. I am glad you are here beside me!

Day 57 Betrayal

In every person’s life as a child, there comes  a day when we discover that our parents lied to us. It is usually not a very big lie, but these parents who we trusted completely and believed every single thing they said and did and we even attempted to imitate them thinking that they knew what they were doing and were experts on how to live life in the best possible way, we catch them in a lie. It might be simply that there is no Santa Claus, it might be that we see them doing some act of selfishness at our expense. It might be one of those do as I say not as I do events. It might be overhearing our parents talking trash about us in the heat of an argument saying things they don’t really mean. But in every child’s life there comes a moment when that child realizes that her parents have lied to her. And this feels like the ultimate betrayal. It is usually the first time we are betrayed by anyone we truly loved.
So it depends on how that child handles that betrayal that can color their whole life experience. Most of us suddenly realize that our parents are not gods. We may realize that our parents are struggling and suffering and not having a very good time here after all. We may realize that our parents do not know everything after all and so we change how we see them and they become human beings instead of gods and we learn to rely on our own selves from that point on. This is that moment in a young teen’s life when she stops confiding in her parents, when she starts making her own decisions, when she would rather choose for herself than rely on her now human parents to make choices for her anymore. This is normal and healthy.
But there are some kids who are so traumatized by the idea that their parents would actually lie to them,  that they never got over it. They feel such a sense of betrayal that they cannot forgive their parents for being human. It becomes blown out of proportion in the child’s mind and there is no one around to seek counseling from, to explain this betrayal is just a human being- being human.
And, instead of going through what most of us go through and learning at this time of childhood that it is better to make our own way than to rely on other humans to do it for us, this person has not recovered from this natural point in every child’s life when they catch the ones they trust doing untrustworthy things. She did not reach that decision to create her own life the best she could and instead just rejected her parents as defective and she is still thinking that there are gods in the world who can run her life for her and not betray her. So time and time again she trusts in someone and makes them the parent god for her life and tine and time again they betray her. It is a broken record.
What she needs to do is take responsibility for her own life, just like that teenage girl who decided it is better to make her own decisions for her own life, no matter how bad or mistaken they may be, rather than to let any other human being run her life for her. We learn by experience how to make better and better choices as we go along. But this person has not even picked up the baton and tried to make her own choices. She has spent her life looking for someone else to make her choices for her. I would encourage her to stand in her power now and begin to create her own life for herself rather than looking for another parent figure god. There are no gods in this world. There is no one else here who would know how to live her life in the best way. Only she can determine that and create that for herself.

Day 55 Sleuthing Out Your Beliefs

It is those beliefs that we are not consciously aware of that create suffering in our lives. We do things because we believe things and we are not even aware that we are believing those things. So those are the beliefs I want you to become aware of so that you can choose whether you wish to have them in your life or not. They are mostly the ones we believe unconsciously, we were trained to believe, we live them without really paying any attention to them. And the way to find them is to observe your thoughts words and actions and ask yourself repeatedly, now why did I choose to do that? Why did I choose to say that? Why did I choose to think that? Find that underlying belief that made you make that choice and write it down and share it with me.  We can work to find good benefitting beliefs for you for FREE. shaman@shamanelder.com

Day 52 Bad Karma is a Cause of Disease

The most dangerous being in all the world is the human being. It is the only being that will deliberately violate your free will choice. So this is the being we need to protect ourselves from. All the other beings can do nothing without your permission or willingness. They are nothing compared to the human being who will violate you and rip your life apart and hurt you or imprison you or kill you.  These are the beings we must learn to deal with yes. Some ways my family taught me to deal with people is to respect that they too have free will choice. There is no reason for me to violate the free will choice of any created thing. I learned to respect the free will of people and of trees and of mountains and of spoons. I will not violate their free will as they too are sentient beings having a life experience here just as I am. But I also respect my own free will and I take responsibility for what I create on this planet too. WE get into trouble when we start trying to push our views, our beliefs onto other beings. When we forget that the spoon is sentient and just throw it in the sink as though it is nothing, that creates bad karma for us. And that karma amasses until nothing is going right for us at all. I was taught at age three how to respect my toys so that I did not create negative karma. I have spent my whole life respecting the free will of everything around me and perhaps it is because I have not created the decades of bad karma by ignoring the free will of everything that I have such joy and peace and abundance in my life. If I can give you one gift from this course , this would be it.
There is an old lama from Tibet. His name is Tsongkhapa. He lived about 1200 AD and is still very famous for his words of wisdom today. And he said, “if the maturation of a karma is in progress, it cannot be altered, even by Buddha. There are many different causes of insanity: intense fear, a chemical imbalance, an imbalance in the body’s elements, deep sorrow, intense greed, and so on. Some become mentally ill simply because of the natural progression of their karma. In this latter case, no ordinary treatment can help. If mental or physical illness is brought about from the maturation of a karma, then the best treatment is the collection of merit and the purification of negativities”.

My Shaman Grandmother knew about the devastating effects of accumulating negative karma in this lifetime. And so she taught me when I was a wee little kid with no more understanding about life than how to play with dollies that I needed to respect  the free will of every sentient being, every creation and offer random acts of kindness anonymously to create good karma in my life.

Day 47: What IS Prayer?

Here is what I have learned. Prayer is an act of connecting to the Essence of Creator within all of us. We are all created by Creator, from Creator and so we are all connected to Creator, actually a part of Creator as we are made from Creator. So everything is Creator as you know. Man creates his own separation from Creator. Creator is not separate from us. Creator is all good. Man decided to believe that Creator is not all good. Creator is all knowing. Man decided, in fact a small group of men made us believe, that Creator is not all knowing.
In praying you are connecting to the essence of Creator within yourself and within everyone. You are connecting to the healing power of Creator within yourself. In your prayers you ask for blessings for yourself. You are connecting to the Creator force and to your blessings. When you pray for healing, you are connecting to the healing power of Creator and asking Creator for healing.
Prayer is the cord to the power of Creator. In Hawaiian shamanism it is called getting into the sea of God, the current of God, Loa. In prayers we offer our intentions. We ask for what we want. And Creator makes this manifest for us, in us and in others.
The third part of prayer is gratitude. Thanking Creator for connecting with us at all times and in all ways. Again recognizing our connection to the Source, and giving thanks for it. I remember my grandmother once told me that if Creator stopped thinking of you, stopped cherishing you for even one second, stopped holding you in Creator’s own mind, you would just vanish in a puff of smoke and be no more. So we thank Creator for this Presence, for connecting with us and for helping us remember our connection to Creator so that these prayers, these intentions can be made manifest.
Praying for others,
As we are so completely connected to Creator, we are also all connected to each other. All of us make up Creator. But yet Creator is more than this. So when we connect to Creator we are also connecting to everyone else. So a prayer for some other person is easily given to that person. You and Creator connect to supply another person, group, city, culture or planet, the focus of Creators Love energy on that person, group,city, culture or planet. It is like a giant spider's web that connects us all. Can the other person refuse the healing Love from Creator? Sure! We all have a free will choice. That is a universal law that cannot be broken. So no healing can occur if the healee does not want healing.
Prayer is a very powerful gift we have, our connection with Creator, a golden cord of light that allows two way communications between us and Creator. Of course Creator is this close to us! In all ways and at all times! It is us who put separation between us and Creator so prayer reconnects us. I highly recommend prayer!
